Barbarella First off I want to dedicated this piece to Jane Fonda … you braved this film. I think I did about 6hrs research on the movie. 1 hour on Concepts and 11hrs assembling the final piece. It was made in Photoshop CS4 and I used 2 Photographic Textures that I made myself. So to start off in the centre is the blind angel Pygar. The large white silhouettes on the left and right are of the two twins that Barbarella encounters on the planet that end up capturing her. Above Pygar is the female character with the horn … can’t remember her name at the moment but yes I decided to split the horn so that it looks like a bird to represent the scene where Barbarella is trapped in the bird cage. Above that there are three circles that represent different states/worlds .. etc for example the large being something like earth and the other 2 being heaven and hell. Of course those three places are locations which are part of my double meaning with the circles … the second meaning being Location, Location, Location which pertains to Duran Duran the villain in the movie … but more specifically the band of the same name.
When the band started playing there were many nearby nightclubs, and the one “significant” one, where bands such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash played gigs, was called Barbarella’s. They would go on to name the band after the villain from Barbarella, Roger Vadim’s French science-fiction film. The villain, played by Milo O’Shea, is named “Dr. Durand Durand”. So the 3 locations (circles) form upward to become a pyramid and at the top the 2 “D’s” representing Durand Durand which is at the top of the image and is the ultimate goal of Barbarella. Next is the radiating pattern of lines which I added to represent the Excessive Machine.
Finally if you flip the poster you will see a silhoette of Barbarella which I imagined her as lying down, her hair becomes the wings of Pygar.
I think that cover the majority of it … Lots more I could have put in … but it was busy enough for me.
The original size of this poster is 13’x19’. Of course credit goes to the creators and all of the people who worked on this movie. Thanks for Looking.
Enjoy
